The GPT Store is OpenAI for Business!

Yes, the GPT Store is finally here, and with it a veritable plethora of GPTs,.

3 Million, in fact.

Of those millions, a good many involve writing, editing, and proofreading. And while they all more or less work the same (because, let’s face it — all GPTs are just GPT-4 with set of custom instructions) the common flaw I’m noticing is that many of them try to do too much with a single GPT.

Let’s say you’re a novelist seeking editorial advice on your latest chapter. You decide to use an “AI Editor” from the GPT Store to do a first pass before sending it off to friends and colleagues. It reads your work and makes corrections as it would for a business email. As it would a resume. As it would for an SEO Optimized article, or whatever kind of writing was given to it.

It gives you the GPT-4 standard advice.

Let’s take it a step further. Say this a hard-boiled detective novel, filled with choppy, pulp-fiction style dialogue and syntax. Despite being highly touted, the GPT editor you’ve selected replaces your diction with one that’s more “grammatically standard?” It’s technically correct in doing so. It’s “fixing” what looks to be a mistake. And in doing so, it’s working against you. Depending on the GPT’s instructions, you might get the wrong advice.

The truth is, the writing GPT you chose might make your writing worse.

These are the sorts of disappointments I imagine a lot of writers will face as they begin playing around with AI. ChatGPT is an amazing tool, given the proper context and direction. But it does have limitations.

Luckily, many of these weaknesses can be mitigated by careful prompting. As they say, you get out what you put in. Better guidance leads to better results.

Most importantly, you need to be specific in what you’re after.

Introducing the Writer’s Suite

That’s where the Sunblock comes in.

Rather than try and build a single tool that does everything, I’ve made a set of GPTs tailored to fit whatever situation you need them for. By defining expectations and specifying the actions each GPT should take, I’ve found more consistent responses from the GPTs, yielding results that are higher in quality than many of the other writing GPTs currently out there.

Take the “Business Professional” GPT, for instance. Though you certainly could upload your query letter into it and get a decent response, it is best at what’s made for — business emails / letters, resumes, and professional correspondence.

The “Query Letter Helper” GPT, on the other hand, possesses a unique set of instructions that draw from the wisdom and experience of writers, agents, and publishers, and is specifically tailored to help you craft your best pitch.

This is, in a nutshell, the entire idea behind the Writer’s Suite — to provide not one tool, but an entire set of them to help maximize your writing potential.

So, what all does the Writer’s Suite include?

As of the time of this post, we have fifteen GPTs available. Five of them are tools designed for specific tasks. The remaining ten GPTs are what I call the “fun ones.”

But first, the five main tools…

Idea Generator – As the name implies, this tool is specifically geared to help you generate ideas and get the word flow started. Whether beginning a new chapter or an entirely new book / script, it will help to get you past that “blank page” wall.

While a great way to get a project going, the Idea Generator is less useful for writers who already know what they want to write about. That’s where the Bounce Ideas (Writer’s Room) GPT comes in handy. You can upload or paste in an idea, summary, or detailed excerpt you’d like to work on and ask it to brainstorm — just like you would in a real writer’s room. Specify how many results you would like back, and whether to adhere closely to your ideas or provide off-the-wall, completely new ones. You have control.

Just remember — specificity yields quality.

The Business Professional and Query Letter Helper GPTs operate exactly as you’d expect (and just as I described above), and should be used in relevant situations.

The Prose Polisher acts as your “AI Editor,” providing general feedback and a lite proofreading pass of your work.

Note — Future releases of the Prose Polisher which will feature variations of “AI Editors’ custom-tailored to a specific genre (i.e. fantasy, romance, crime). This will avoid the genre misunderstandings I was talking about above. For now, you can specify the genre, style, and tone of your writing to the Prose Polisher when you input your text. You can also specify a favorite author you’d like to emulate.

Then there are the “AI Authors.”

If you’ve ever wondered what Frankenstein would sound like written by Dr. Seuss, you’re in luck. These AI Authors were designed using few-shot learning to more accurately emulate their styles and tones. This makes it easy for you to quickly transform your prose in fun and interesting ways.

They’re also a helluva a lot fun to play with.

As of this post, ten famous authors and poets are featured in the Writer’s Suite: Jane Austen, Ernest Hemingway, Edgar Allen Poe, J.R.R. Tolkien, Maya Angelou, Mark Twain, James Joyce, Dr. Seuss, Isaac Asimov, and Oscar Wilde.

I have plans to add many more authors future releases, so check back often. Or, you can sign up and receive email updates whenever new releases occur. Members also enjoy early access to upcoming GPTs that I’m testing.

Registration is completely free.

What Comes Next?

We’re just a few hours into this new world. I have no idea if the GPT Store will be a huge hit or colossal flop. Regardless, I plan to continue developing AI tools that are beneficial to writers, and improving the ones I’ve made so far.

To that end, I need your help! If you’ve used any of the Writer’s Suite and would like to provide me with much-appreciated feedback, you can email me your thoughts (or rants) at sunblockcontact@gmail.com. Let me know what works well, or what doesn’t work at all. Tell me what tools are missing so I can build them. You can also make AI Author requests and I will do my best to fulfill them.

For now, we enter the brave new world of GPTs. Stay posted to see how things with the store develop, and please let me what you think of the Writer’s Suite!

~ Chris
